Abandoned or temporarily occupied sites located in the vicinity of major
infrastructures constitute a large part of Boston's metropolitan territory
- zones adjacent to motorways, railway lines, shopping malls, large
parking lots, and areas of the industrial port. Since they are connected
to an ill-defined suburban, yet increasingly urban infrastructure network,
these derelict sites have the potential to compose a type of superimposed
geography. This discovered landscape is one of great significance for
contemporary American towns, where a lack of identifiable collective
structures is gaining consciousness. The intention of the master plan
was to identify and map these vacant spaces and envisage their metamorphosis.
