This master plan proposes an adaptive reuse of Toronto's Portlands -
a post-industrial area containing over a thousand acres of under-used
or abandoned industrial land. The master plan facilitates sustainable
development of a new mixed-use urban community, while responding to
the site and addressing the programmatic needs of the city. It creates
healthy, ecologically vigorous, environmentally conscious, and self-supporting
environments. The scale of the site and its close proximity to Toronto's
downtown core provides a unique opportunity for redevelopment encompasing
a mosaic of uses ranging from waterfront parkland to commercial and
residential development. The plan proposes on-site brownfield remediation
for the phased transformation of the site. This proposal was awarded
an Honourable Mention in the 2001 Toronto Architectural and Urban Design
Awards.
