The Infestation Garden explores our cultural associations, abilities,
and management approaches to insect infestations in the landscape. Infestations
have the ability to completely alter or eradicate a forest, a row of
street trees, or a single specimen garden tree. The resultant impact,
inevitably damaging to our economic structure, has spawned the development
of increasingly complex strategies to combat or lessen the infestations.
The extraordinary lengths we go to, to protect ourselves from infestations,
to win the competition for food, fiber, or space, has resulted in hybridizations,
chemical concoctions, and gene manipulations that may alter or even
endanger the very ecosystems at risk. The garden explores the complexities
and unfolding forms of both the initial infestation and the envisioned
transformation.
