This memorial takes inspiration from a grand elm on the site, and highlights it to tell the story of the Contrabands and Freedmen. The samara from the elm holds memory of genetic material when displaced to a new site. The gently twisting quality of the samara is mimicked with inscripted metal panels that twirl with the wind. The panels relay historic imagery of the Contrabands and Freedmen, to recognize their contribution to the community, and through this memorial an official marking of their final resting. A strong zig-zag path connects the burial site with the contemplative park area of the big elm. Here a new grid of trees is planted to remind visitors of the story of setting roots, and of location and dislocation.
